Izaak Walton Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarships
The Killam Trusts have contributed to the advancement of learning at the University of Calgary since 1967. The primary purpose is to support advanced education and research at five selected Canadian universities, including the University of Calgary, and the Canada Council for the Arts. This scholarship is awarded to doctoral students of outstanding calibre.

Open Doctoral Scholarships
The Open Doctoral Scholarships selections are based on academic merit and research potential. To be eligible for Open Doctoral Scholarships students must have achieved a first-class average, as determined by the university issuing the transcripts, in the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent). At the University of Calgary, a student must have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the last 2 years of study. Each institution has their own definition of first-class average. The University of Calgary does not convert scales.
These scholarships are administered by the University of Calgary through the Graduate Award Competition (GAC)

Doctoral Recruitment Scholarships

Open to international and Canadian candidates who will be registered full-time in the first year of a doctoral program. These scholarships were established to attract and retain the best and brightest future leaders from around the world in support of the University of Calgary’s Eyes High vision of becoming one of the top five research universities in Canada.
Doctoral recruitment scholarships are exempt from the regulation regarding multiple awards .

Special Awards and Bursaries
Special awards and bursaries are funded by donors who wish to support a particular area of interest or research. Students must demonstrate financial need to be eligible for bursaries.

Achievement Awards
The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers two achievement awards. Recipients receive a commemorative plaque and a cash prize.

Medals and Prizes
Medals and Prizes recognize graduates whose dissertations make an original and significant contribution to their academic field.
These external prizes are administered through the University of Calgary. For application information, contact your graduate program.
Program Recommended Awards
Program recommended awards support students registered in a specific program or faculty. Award recipients are selected by graduate programs.

Travel Awards
Travel awards are available to students who are presenting their work or research at major national and/or international conferences. Students may apply for one award at the master’s level and one award at the doctoral level.
