Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF)

The Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures (AITF) Doctoral and Master’s Scholarships are designed to support high calibre International or Canadian students undertaking a full-time graduate program in areas of research important to Alberta.

These areas are: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Nano, and Omics (Omics consists of: Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Transcriptomics and Regulomics); in and of themselves, or additionally supporting the areas of Health, Bio-industries, or Energy and the Environment.

Note: This program will not support medical or health-related research initiatives that qualify for support from the Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR),or similar medical research agencies. Candidates performing research that is clearly health-related must apply directly to AIHS, CIHR or similar medical research agencies.


January Competition – incoming students only

If you are applying for admission to the University of Calgary for a program commencing between May and September 2012, we invite you to apply to the January AITF competition. The January AITF competition is for incoming students only and you will be notified of the results in time to inform your decision about attending the University of Calgary.

Application Deadline

January 15 to the Graduate Program Administrator in the program to which you are applying, unless the program has an earlier deadline. Confirm your program’s deadline as late applications will not be considered.

You should also apply to the Graduate Award Competition to be considered for other University of Calgary scholarships.

February Competition – incoming and continuing students

We invite you to apply for the AITF scholarships by applying through the February Graduate Award Competition.

Application Process

Graduate Award Competition

1.      Two References – submit to program

References must be written on the University of Calgary Scholarship Award Reference and Request Form. References for admission may be used toward the scholarship competition as long as they have been written within the last twelve months (as of February 1) and include a statement confirming the reference may be used for scholarship purposes as well. Continuing students in a graduate program must submit two current references. One reference should be from the supervisor.

Faxed references will be accepted provided they are on letterhead and submitted with the cover page to verify authenticity. These must be faxed directly from the referee to your GPA.

Email references will be accepted from an Institutional/Business email address provided they are submitted with the email to verify authenticity. These must be emailed directly from the referee to your GPA.

2.      Transcripts – submit to program

Official transcripts from every post-secondary institution you have attended or are attending must be submitted with your scholarship application. You may contact your GPA and request that he/she make copies of transcripts from originals on file and print the UofC transcript from the system. Transcripts printed by students from their Student Centre will not be accepted.

3.      Eligible NEW NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS), Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS), Julie Payette-NSERC Research or Vanier CGS award holders (awarded spring 2012) will be considered for the NSERC award holder AITF stipend. This funding is not automatic as there are more candidates than available funding. No application is required.
