February 1 to your Graduate Program Administrator, unless the program has an earlier deadline. Confirm your program’s deadline as late applications will not be considered.
Applications forwarded to FGS are adjudicated by three academic members of the Graduate Scholarship Committee. The adjudication process produces a rank list with the top ranked applicants receiving the highest value scholarships and so on down the list.
Applicants are assessed according to academic record, letters of reference, research proposal or statement of program, awards received, contributions to research and other relevant experience. Criteria used to evaluate applications.
Izaak Walton Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarship & Open Doctoral Scholarships: programs are given quotas for these scholarships and forward selected applications to FGS for final adjudication through the Graduate Award Competition.
Special Awards and Bursaries: there are no quotas for these scholarships. Programs forward all Special Awards and Bursary applications to FGS for adjudication through the Graduate Award Competition.
Complete and email the application to your Graduate Program Administrator (GPA) by the program deadline date.

In addition to submitting the application by the deadline, submit the following documents to the appropriate office. Submission of these documents to the wrong office may result in missing the deadline and not being considered.
1. Two References – submit to program
References must be written on the University of Calgary Scholarship Award Reference and Request Form. References for admission may be used toward the scholarship competition as long as they have been written within the last twelve months (as of February 1) and include a statement confirming the reference may be used for scholarship purposes as well. Continuing students in a graduate program must submit two current references. One reference should be from the supervisor.
Faxed references will be accepted provided they are on letterhead and submitted with the cover page to verify authenticity. These must be faxed directly from the referee to your GPA.
Email references will be accepted from an Institutional/Business email address provided they are submitted with the email to verify authenticity. These must be emailed directly from the referee to your GPA.
2. Transcripts – submit to program
Official transcripts from every post-secondary institution you have attended or are attending must be submitted with your scholarship application. Current University of Calgary (UofC) transcripts must be provided even when no grades have been assigned.
You may contact your GPA and request that he/she make copies of transcripts from originals on file and print the UofC transcript from the system. Transcripts printed by students from their Student Centre will not be accepted.
3. Appendix B – Bursary Financial Information – submit to FGS
You must complete this information demonstrating financial need when applying for a bursary(s) and email to gsaward [at] ucalgary [dot] ca no later than February 1. Appendix B must be submitted to the Graduate Scholarship Office (not to your program) for your application to be considered complete. If you do not complete the financial need section, you will not be considered for a bursary(s).
NOTE: Appendix B is the only document submitted by students directly to the FGS Graduate Scholarship Office.
