The Trudeau Foundation has established the annual Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships programme for outstanding students working in one or more of the following areas: human rights and social justice, responsible citizenship, Canada and the world, and humans and their natural environment. Each scholarship consists of an annual stipend of $40,000 and an annual travel allowance of $20,000, for up to four years. The Foundation will award up to 15 new scholarships per year.
The Trudeau Scholars Programme seeks candidates at the level of the most competitive scholarship programmes worldwide. To be eligible candidates must be applying into the first year of a Ph.D. at University of Calgary, or be registered in the first or second year of a Ph.D. at University of Calgary. Although priority will be accorded to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents, up to one fourth of the total number of Trudeau Scholars may be international students (international students from developing world will be given preference).
Please note: Trudeau Scholars are expected to become leading national and international figures in their fields and in Canada. The level of competition is such that universities generally have only one successful candidate in each competition; many universities do not have any successful candidates at all. The award is targeted to a very few outstanding students, and the past years’ competitions indicate that a record of good scholarship alone is unlikely to result in an award.
Candidates must demonstrate the following qualities in their applications:
Students are required to complete the application form, including supporting documents (transcripts, letters of reference). Application forms (as well as competition guidelines and other information) are available from the Trudeau Foundation website. Students submit their complete application packages to The Faculty of Graduate Studies, Graduate Scholarship Office, Earth Science bulding, ES702, by the deadline date.
Deadline for submission to the University of Calgary Faculty of Graduate Studies is November 20, 2009 by 4.30 pm. Please note that late or incomplete applications will not be considered and this deadline will not be extended.
Applications will be reviewed and ranked by a sub-committee of the Graduate Scholarship Committee consisting of University of Calgary Faculty members. The University of Calgary may nominate a maximum of six applications to the Trudeau Foundation per year. Finalists will be contacted by the end of February 2010 and interviews will take place in March 2010. Successful candidates will be notified in April 2010.
