Accommodations

The Residence Services website has further information on graduate residences and residence rates. Acceptance into graduate school does not include acceptance into University residence. Campus residency and rental units in Calgary are in high demand and it is essential that you apply early.

For information on accommodations outside of residence, check newspaper ads (Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun) and Off-Campus Housing Listings.

Transportation

Calgary Transit includes the C-Train (or LRT system), with a University Station on the East side of campus, and various bus stops around campus.  All full-time students receive a ‘U-Pass' as part of their general fees upon registration which entitles you to free access to the city transit system.  At the start of each semester (Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer) students need to get a validation sticker on their student ID card to activate the U-Pass.

The campus map shows the location of LRT and bus stops.

Cost of Living

In calculating monthly living expenses it is important to keep in mind that there are many options available to students. Some students prefer to live on campus in traditional residences with meals provided, others prefer to live off campus and do their own cooking. Some students depend on public transportation (a local transit pass is provided to all full-time students) while others want a car. Costs will vary considerably depending on how students choose to live.

Remember that the first month will be your most expensive. If you are renting accommodation you will usually need to pay a full month's extra rent as a damage deposit. Expenses for books and supplies are greater at the beginning of a semester.

For more detailed information about program specific costs, contact your department.

If you wish to take advantage of local recreational facilities and the proximity to the Rocky Mountains and National Parks please allow for extra expense. Rental of sports equipment is available through the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre at competitive rates.

If you have to buy winter clothing your costs will be higher, although there are several good quality used clothing shops and winter clothing sales where you can save. Plan to bring warm clothing, sheets and towels from home. Major savings on food are also possible depending on where you shop.

The costs of setting up an apartment (buying furniture, dishes, etc.) should also be taken into consideration.
